Director of Development

Reporting to the CEO, the Director provides the leadership, management and coordination for Edgewood's fundraising efforts including donor marketing and communications.  The Director will design and implement strategies to increase annual funding through increases in individual giving, major gifts, foundation and government grants, corporate partnerships,planned gifts and special events. With the support of the CEO and Board, he or she is expected to make changes that strengthen the professionalism and capacity of the Development Department in order to equip the organization to meet annual program funding needs of $3.5 million by 2010 and $5 million by 2013. The Director will work with the CEO, Board and Development staff to optimize the department's structure and configuration. This includes bringing to Edgewood and the Development Department the practices, systems, accountability, Board and Executive staff engagement and methods of a world class fundraising organization.  The Director will oversee and implement the agency's donor communications plan and supervise the Director of Communications.

Minimum Requirements

  • Significant nonprofit fundraising experience with a sizable institution that includes capital, annual fund, event and endowment elements; experience raising significant funds from individuals, foundations, and business sources
  • A record of personal success in raising money through major gifts from individuals, businesses, foundations, corporations or the public sector; broad-based knowledge of various development campaign activities including: direct mail, proposal and grant development, planned giving, capital campaigns, event planning and management, direct solicitations, leveraging fundraising databases and support systems for donor segmentation, research and volunteer management
  •  Senior-level experience in brand execution, marketing, advertising and media relations with specific experience in communicating complex issues to exsisting and potential funders
  • An understanding of fundraising systems and how data can be used to manage the fundraising process and to drive priorities and cultivation efforts
  • A track record as an exceptional communicator, in writing as well as verbally; adept at writing proposals, solicitation letters, donor correspondence, and other kinds of material for publication
  • Demonstrated management skills in motivating, directing and managing staff and consultants, and in coordinating and supporting the fundraising activities of others
