Afterschool Mental Health Consultation

Edgewood Center for Children and Families together with Instituto Familiar de la Raza, and the Special Needs Inclusion Project of Support for Families of Children with Disabilities are joining together to pilot an innovative mental health consultation and capacity building initiative for including children with disabilities in after school programs.  The Edgewood After-School Consultation Team (ACT) meets with programs to help them assess their needs, to train in behavior management, and to consult with staff for individual program participants.  This initiative is funded by DCYF.

Goals of Initiative:

  • Increase after-school program providers understanding of mental health issues, special needs and inclusion practices.
  • Maximize professional skills of staff to provide culturally and developmentally appropriate environments inclusive of all children.
  • Support and improve the skills of parents/caregivers to foster healthy social and emotional development in their children.
  • Facilitate linkages to needed resources.

The  A.C.T. Three Tiered Approach:

Level 1- Training and Outreach:   Citywide trainings for program staff to support positive behaviors.
Level 2 - Individual Consultation: Edgewood will conduct observations and assessments and develop  strategies to intervene with behaviors, work with staff, provide group consultation and conduct workshops for parents.
Level 3 - Intensive Intervention: Edgewood consultants provide training around structure,  environment etc.  A behavior coach and/or a clinician will be available consistently over period of time and embedded into the program.
