Edgewood KinStart helps ensure that young children being raised by a member of their family (other than a parent) receive the best possible start in life.

Who It Helps

  • Learn and Eat socials allow participants to benefit from resources while sharing a meal. Child care is available.
  • Playgroups encourage positive interactions between relative caregivers and their children. Each session teaches children social skills to prepare him or her for preschool and kindergarten.
  • Support and parenting enrichment gives caregivers an opportunity to socialize and build support systems with other caregivers.
  • Information on best practices in child development and discipline; importance of talk, touch, and play in early childhood development; and a variety of other information is available to caregivers.
  • Referrals to additional resources at Edgewood and elsewhere that support caregivers and their children.
  • Languages: Bilingual facilitators who speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, and Tagalog are available.
  • Case management for families requiring temporary increased assistance to adjust to their new role.

Program Goals 

  • Expand and enhance access to Family Support Services for San Francisco children ages 0-5 who are living with relatives.
  • Focus on early intervention, parenting support, and education.
  • Help create a place where Kinship families feel a sense of belonging, and where they can share and learn from one another.
  • Empower relative caregivers so that they can better care for their children.

Children particpating in Edgewood KinStart are also at greater risk because, at program entry, they have fewer experiences or supports known to promote school readiness than their state and national peers, such as:

  • Being of normal weight at birth
  • Having been breast-fed
  • Having health insurance
  • Having regular medical and dental care
