Back to School Again with My New Red Shoes

September 19, 2012

(San Francisco, CA): In 2012 Back to School season was welcomed by Edgewood’s children and families with gifts of new shoes and $50 in cash from My New Red Shoes. This is the fifth consecutive year that My New Red Shoes, a local Bay Area non-profit, has selected Edgewood’s children and youth (ages 4 to 18). This year, an estimated 200 Edgewood children and youth received assistance from My New Red Shoes.

For Dylan, and his family (recently enrolled in Edgewood’s San Mateo Kinship program), a new pair of shoes and a $50 gift card could not have come and a better time. His maternal grandmother has been caring for Dylan and his younger sister on and off since they were born. Neither of the children’s fathers nor their mother is involved in their lives. This summer Dylan, his sister, and grandmother faced homelessness after they were no longer able to stay at a relative’s home. They slept on the floor of a friend’s house until they were able to enter a shelter. They are still currently at the shelter awaiting transitional housing. The donation of My New Red Shoes came at a perfect time, as Dylan is starting 3rd grade and it is the first time he is attending school in San Mateo County, being that he had been home schooled in years prior.

His grandmother was very appreciative of the donation, especially because she did not have the means to purchase new shoes or clothes for Dylan on her very limited income. Several agencies in San Mateo have all played a factor in helping this family get stabilized and continue on their road to self sufficiency.
