Levi's Community Day 2016
May 9, 2016
Levis Strauss & Co. - Helping Kids One Pair of Jeans at a Time!
It’s not often that an organization is fortunate enough to partner with one of San Francisco’s truly historic companies for over 160 years, but that’s exactly the case for Edgewood Center for Children and Families and Levi Strauss & Co.
Founded in 1851, Edgewood started as a gold rush orphanage, and is the oldest children's charity in the western United States. In 1854, Mr. Levi Strauss donated $100 to Edgewood and thus began a partnership between two organizations that is truly embedded in the fabric of San Francisco. Now, 162 years later, Edgewood and LS&Co. are still partnering in support of 7,000 kids and families in crisis throughout the Bay Area each year.
Thanks to the creative vision Levi's leaders had 16 years ago, the company started a tradition which has become a favorite for staff. Community Day is an opportunity for employees in offices around the globe to get away from their desks for the day to volunteer at local nonprofits, like Edgewood. Since the inaugural Community Day, employees have donated roughly 625,000 hours of their time and completed more than 1,400 community projects at over 700 nonprofit organizations.
At Edgewood LS&Co.’s partners with Hands on Bay Area (HOBA) to produce the well-loved annual Community Day which includes pop-up shops where youth, ages 6-17, can "shop" for clothes, as well as an opportunity for Levi's staff to do other projects around the campus, and even play a spirited game of soccer with the youth.
Sized beforehand, each Edgewood youth who lives in one of our residential cottages, or who is enrolled in our Day Treatment campus schools receives free Levi’s products, including jeans, jean jackets (known as truckers), hoodies, and backpacks. These Levi’s gifts are extra special for our youth as many arrive at Edgewood with little to no clothing, and to receive such quality and hip Levi’s clothing brings smiles to young faces.
New this year - LS&Co. made the day extra special for kids by turning the Edgewood eagle (our mascot) into a cool iron-on patch!
This year marks the 165th anniversary of Edgewood’s founding and the 50th anniversary of the Edgewood Fair. To mark this historic year and partnership, Edgewood was pleased to honor Levi Strauss & Co. with a Legacy Partner Award at this year’s Fair held on April 28 and 29 at the Bently Reserve.
Levi Strauss & Co. is our Legacy Partner for many reasons, and not just because of that $100 donation back in 1854. We love welcoming Levi’s volunteers each year for the pop-up shops and campus beautification projects, we are grateful for the annual grants received in support of programming, including the $20,000 grant received in honor of this historic year and an additional $5,000 gift presented to us during this year's Community Day, and we recognize the creative and sustainable investment in our campus projects, including the donation of the drip irrigation system in our Edgewood Garden Learning Center, and the Levi’s denim insulation inside the walls of our Garden Arts classroom. We are honored to count Levi Strauss & Co. as a partner in Edgewood’s mission of promoting the behavioral health of children, youth, and families and supporting a positive transition to adulthood.
Thank you, Levi’s, for this strong partnership and congratulations on being Edgewood’s first Legacy Partner! We look forward to another century of partnership and support of restoring hope and transforming lives of the kids and families in the Bay Area.
