SAN FRANCISCO — On May 19, 2009, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) gave Omid Jeff Naim, M.D., a 2009 Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. Dr. Naim is one of only three California psychiatrists to receive the award in 2009. He is a child and adolescent psychiatrist in three Edgewood programs: Safe Start, The Child and Family Treatment Collaborative, and Turning Point.
“We are proud to honor 41 psychiatrists from across the country for their exceptional dedication to people living with mental illness,” said NAMI executive director Michael Fitzpatrick. “These doctors go above and beyond in their support of individuals and families, mental health advocacy, and public education.”
“I feel honored for this acknowledgment of the important work I do at Edgewood,” said Dr. Naim. “Working at Edgewood has given me an amazing opportunity to help children who are struggling with very complicated psychiatric challenges, most often caused by abuse and neglect.”
Dr. Naim works in three important Edgewood programs in San Mateo County. Safe Start provides support and assistance to young children, ages 0-7 years, who have been exposed to violence. The Child and Family Treatment Collaborative, an alliance of three agencies, works to stop the cycle of family violence by addressing the needs of child victims, ages 6-18. Edgewood Turning Point offers an alternative to residential placement by helping youth ages 16-25 who are struggling with severe mental health challenges stay in their communities and learn to thrive independently.
Established in 1992, the NAMI awards are given annually to a group of exemplary psychiatrists who have set an example for their professional colleagues.
The University of California San Francisco's acclaimed Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry partners with Edgewood to provide a resident training program that is designed to help the child and adolescent psychiatry residents develop core skills essential to the current and future practice of the profession. It offers diverse and challenging clinical, didactic, and supervisory experiences. UCSF and Edgewood also partner to provide a clinical rotation for medical students interested in a career in psychiatry.
