Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals

As a volunteer, you can help Edgewood children and families in many ways, including those listed below. If you have other ideas about how you can share your expertise with Edgewood, please do let us know.

Thank you for your willingness to help at Edgewood! Here are some of our volunteer opportunities:

SAN FRANCISCO OPPORTUNITIES

Breakfast Club

Cook breakfast for the children, then meet and eat with them in our cottages. The kids always appreciate a home cooked meal from people who truly care.

Status: Limited openings

Time Commitment: Sign up on the Hands On Bay Area website.  Scheduled for the first Saturday of each month from 8:30 to 11:30 am

Events

Edgewood hosts various fundraising and community events, from auctions and races to talent shows. You can help with making these events a success.  We always appreciate assistance with decorations, set-up, ushering, food service, etc.

Status: Open on an as needed basis

Time commitment: Determined by event occurrence

Gardening

Help beautify the Vicente campus by helping with landscaping, planting, and general gardening needs.

Status: Open

Time commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hours) and during the weekday or on weekends

Translation/Office Assistance

Help Edgewood with translating documents into the languages that our clients require, which include in order of need: Spanish, Cantonese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Russian.  You can also assist us in essential office support work such as typing, filing, mailings, and other duties.

Status: Open

Time commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hours) and as your schedule permits between 9 am and 5 pm.

Residential/Cottage Assistance

The counselors who work in our cottages always appreciate an extra helping hand with the kids.  You will be able to work alongside our residential staff and get an in-depth look at what it means to work with our children.

Status: Currently filled; if interested, still accepting volunteers to be placed on wait list

Time Commitment:  Volunteer Orientation (3 hours) and as your schedule permits.

Volunteer Coordination

Help support the volunteer program at Edgewood.  Volunteer to coordinate volunteers!  Assist in the intake process with interviewing, follow up, and placing volunteers.  In addition, coordinate individual and group opportunity web postings and recognition. 

Status: Open

Time commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hours) and on a weekly basis or as your schedule permits

Tutoring 

Tutor children in various subjects after school.

Status: Currently filled; if interested, still accepting volunteers to be placed on wait list

Time Commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hours) and either during or after school hours during the week.

Physical Education (P.E.)/Health Nutrition Assistance 

Run around and play sports with the kids, and share your knowledge and experience with health and nutrition as it relates to young people.

Status: Open

Time Commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hours) and once or twice a week during the school day.

Your special Skills

You may have special hobbies or skills that you can share with Edgewood children and families. Maybe you play an instrument, can give singing lessons, or enjoy photography. Maybe your interests and talents lay in writing, art, sports or other areas. Contact us so we can talk about how you can bring your unique talents to volunteering at Edgewood.

SAN MATEO OPPORTUNITIES:

Kinship Activities Intern

The Kinship and Family Support program seeks energetic and skilled part‐time tutoring and recreation interns with a wide range of academic, organizational, and technical skills to assist in the planning and implementation of after school tutoring sessions, educational activities, and recreation events. The internship position will report to the Youth and Family Activities Coordinator and support the activities of the Kinship Program in the above functions.

Time Commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hour training) and after school hours until 7:30pm

Drop In Center Support

Youth volunteers close in age to those that participate in the Drop In Center's services (16-25 years old).  Someone who can see and treat the youth as if they were their own neighbors, relatives, or friends, and provide positive role-modeling and mentoring.

Status: Open

Time Commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hour training) and after school hours until 7:30pm

Food Bank

Help to organize and hand out food boxes to the San Carlos community. 

Status:  Open

Time Commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hour training) and every third Monday of the month for 2 hours

Translation

Provide translation services in Spanish, Cantonese, or Tagalog for our caregivers and team members at home, in the office, or during community visits.

Status: Open

Time Commitment: Volunteer Orientation (3 hour training) and as your schedule permits
