Believe Campaign: Residential Treatment Crisis

Thank You!

Thanks to Edgewood's supporters, we did it! Because Edgewood's friends sent more than 300 letters to City leaders, Edgewood's residential program will remain open to San Francisco children. We would like to extend our deep appreciation to Mayor Newsom for including funding for children in Edgewood's residential treatment program in this year's budget. Securing funding for this year will give us the time to work with County and State leaders to find a long-term solution to the funding crisis for California kids who need intensive treatment to recover from severe abuse, neglect, and trauma.

Our Kids Depend on You

Thanks to the Mayor and donors like you, we've closed the funding gap for our residential treatment program. It's important to understand that all of our programs depend on private donors. In the 08/09 Fiscal Year, Edgewood must raise $3.5 million through private donations to cover the cost of providing  high-quality services that truly transform the lives of children who desperately need hope.

Believe in S.F. Children

Edgewood is the oldest children’s charity west of the Mississippi. One of many Edgewood programs, our residential treatment cottages have been a safety net for San Francisco’s most vulnerable children for more than 155 years. Edgewood provides the last local alternative to a locked psychiatric hospital or out-of county placement for local children with severe psychological and emotional challenges resulting from abuse, neglect, and crisis.

S.F. Kids on the Brink
by Heather Knight

It was founded during the Gold Rush for kids orphaned by parents off seeking riches, and Edgewood Center in San Francisco's Sunset District has been treating and housing the city's most troubled children ever since.

The modern-day stories are almost unbearable. Kids treated at Edgewood in the past several months include a suicidal 10-year-old, a 12-year-old prostitute, a boy who threatened to set his grandmother on fire, a girl who repeatedly lay down in the middle of traffic and a child who saw his parents killed.

"We've always been there for San Francisco families, no matter what the issue is," said Nancy Rubin, Edgewood Center's chief executive officer. "Now the issues are poverty, drugs, AIDS, parents going to prison, violence." more...
